  1. Have a presence online

The first great mistake that small businesses make is that they assume that just because they’re not selling their product online, means they shouldn’t be active online. It’s vital that people have the chance to learn about your business and products online. The customer purchase decision is often times mentally made outside of the business. Even if you’re not investing money on online ads or marketing, be sure to have a good online presence.

  1. Capture leads when not selling online

Another very common mistake among small businesses is the fact that they’re not getting leads or enough leads through their site. It’s easy to get lazy as a business, and to believe that people will call you if they need your product or services. In this age of time where people aren’t afraid to give out their information, businesses should capitalize on this. In most cases it’s even better if a person fills out a lead from, versus calling, because you get to keep all their information. You can follow up with them later on, as compared to the call. Now, imagine having hundreds and thousands of people filled out lead forms, all of a sudden you have a list of people you can promote your product to when you have promotion.

  1. Engage with your local community

Social media may not be your best source for conversions, but it will be one of your best weapons for being involved with the local community. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook are the perfect hashtag arenas that will display what the locals are talking about and engaging. I’ve personally been very impressed with a small local coffee shop that is on the ball with Instagram. Community events are constantly being posted and hashtagged, making this shop and their company a big name in the local community. Small businesses should be very active on all social media networks because is very affordable and can build a brand name in your community.

  1. Digital banner ads work locally

Google’s display ad network allows for small businesses to be able to create a banner and then display it on websites in their online community. The technology is so advanced that if a user is outside of a certain area, the banner will not be shown. Even with Facebook ads and Google Adwords PPC ads, businesses can target users only in their locality. While this may not be the most cost efficient, it can send a larger message to a local audience.

  1. Don’t neglect your marketing offline

Offline marketing will go hand in hand with your online marketing. It can be more time and money to market offline, but the buzz will usually convert into online searches and web interactions, which will convert into leads.
